TSFF OF THE LITTLE ONES, SPECIAL SCREENING, WILD ROSES, AND QUEER VISIONS

The third day of the 36th Trieste Film Festival begins at 11:00 AM with the out-of-competition feature film

ELF MAL MORGEN: BERLINALE MEETS FUSSBALL by Eva Gemmer, Hannah Jandl, Killian Armando Friedrich, Sophie Mühe,Anna-Maria Dutoit, Justina Jürgensen, Hilarija Ločmele, Daniela Magnani Hüller, Marie Zrenner, Indira Geisel, Maximilian Bungarten

(Eleven Tomorrows: Berlinale Meets Football, DE, 2024, col., 108’). The Berlinale contributed to the cultural program of the European Football Championship, hosted by Germany in 2024, with the omnibus film Elf Mal Morgen: Berlinale Meets Fußball. For this project, 11 short documentaries have been commissioned about 11 very different youth football teams. The films have been made by students at the Munich University of Television and Film (HFF München) in collaboration with the teams themselves, under the artistic direction of Benedetta Films. Eleven teams, each consisting of two HFF students (directing and cinematography), conducted research in order to make the short documentary. A compilation of 11 short films on the inclusive function of football for young people. Each of the films highlights the importance of friendship and community for kids and teenagers, even when growing up in different situations and conditions. The film premiered at the Berlinale in 2024.

We return to Wild Roses: Serbia and present, at 2:15 PM, DOMOVINE by Jelena Maksimović (Homelands, SRB, 2020, col. & b-w, 63’). Premiered at FID Marseille, Domovine was then screened at numerous international film festivals, including the Trieste Film Festival in 2021. The film tells the story of a young woman who discovers the mountain village – on the border between North Macedonia and Greece – from which her grandmother fled during the Greek Civil War. There, she faces ruins of abandoned houses and oblivion of the past. In the summer, the woman returns to the village, carrying with her a sense of imminent change.

At 4:00 PM the section screens KELTI by Milica Tomović (Celts, SRB, 2021, col., 106’). In Belgrade, in 1993, Marijana throws a sleepover party for her daughter’s 8th birthday. Taking advantage of the rare opportunity when their children are kept entertained in the other room, the parents open a few bottles in the kitchen and enjoy their night. Marijana suddenly realizes that she longs for more than just a bunch of drunken guests and an inattentive husband. Kelti premiered at the Berlinale in the “Panorama” section and at the Sarajevo FF, where it won the Best Director award. The film was in competition at the Trieste FF in 2022.

Alle 16:00 e 17:30 presso il TEATRO MIELA (RIDOTTINO) si tiene anche il TSFF DEI PICCOLI che ci propone MAGIE UNGHERESI IN STOP MOTION HUNGARIAN STOP MOTION MAGICa cura di National Film Institute Hungary – Film Archive.

At 4:00 and 5:30 PM, TEATRO MIELA (RIDOTTINO) will also host TSFF OF THE LITTLE ONES, presenting HUNGARIAN STOP MOTION MAGIC, curated by National Film Institute Hungary – Film Archive.

At 6:00 PM, we move to the BOBI BAZLEN hall for the panel discussion IMAGINING THE BALKANS. MEMORY AND THE PRESENT IN THE CULTURAL PRODUCTION OF THE YUGOSPHERE featuring Elvira Mujčić, Marina Lalović, Martina Napolitano curated by Meridiano 13.
We return to Teatro Miela at 6:15 PM with the screening of the out-of-competition documentary C’ERA UN COMICO DI NOME CECCHELIN by Alessio Bozzer (There Was a Comedian Called Cecchelin, I, 2025, col. & b-w, 92’). Who was Angelo Cecchelin? Rome had Petrolini, Naples had Totò. In Trieste, there was Cecchelin. He was an immensely popular comedian, a brilliant and tireless inventor of hilarious jokes. Caustic, cynical, and beloved for his ability to mock those in power. An irredentist at the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, an irreverent anti-fascist in 1920s, he didn’t shy away from making fun of the “Reds” and the Yugoslavs during the “40 Days”, nor from using his sharp irony on the Allies when they ruled the city. He paid the price with suspensions, warnings, lawsuits, arrests, long periods behind bars, or being forced into a withdrawal from the stage.

At 8:30 PM, once again, we return to the Wild Roses: Serbia section with 78 DANA by Emilija Gašić (78 days, SRB, 2024, col., 82’). The film brings us back to 1999, just before their father is conscripted during the NATO bombing of Serbia. Sisters Sonja and Dragana begin a video diary on a home camera. They film the peaceful nature around them, the sky at night during air raids and their teasing of their seven year-old sister, Tijana. Things change when a mysterious boy and his shy, younger sister arrive from Belgrade and move into the neighbour’s house. Soon, new friendships, first kisses and first disappointments take over the fear of bombs. Shot in Hi8, 78 dana premiered at IFF Rotterdam 2024 and was then presented in more than 30 international film festivals.

At 10:00 PM, the Queer Visions section presents AVANT-DRAG! Radical Performers Re-Imagine Athens by Fil Ieropoulos (GR, 2024, col., 92’). “In the poetic documentary Avant-Drag!, we follow the lives of ten Athens-based drag performers as they create their temporary worlds as a refuge against a hostile reality. By closely watching the protagonists’ lives and modes of expression, we get in touch with a new scene that has been blossoming in recent years and discover through them how the art and performances of drag can transform reality and create safe spaces for people marginalized by Greek society …” (F. Ieropoulos)

Following Avant-drag and concluding the day’s screenings is THE GARDEN CADENCES by Dane Komljen (DE-SRB, 2024). Mollies is a queer-feminist collective that has lived at a trailer park next to Ostkreuz in Berlin for nearly a decade. The Garden Cadences documents their final summer there before eviction. “In 2021, I made traces of a moment that would otherwise be inevitably lost and filmed Mollies before their imminent eviction … For Mollies, living together was not just about seeking a different way of living, but also about the need to form a community that would embrace and empower.” (D. Komljen)

SMALL PARTY ACTIONS

curated by Elsa Mencagli Andersen

The micro-actions probe the space where one transitions from rational and verbal experience to exploration with the body, in a slow and expansive time, allowing both visitors and the artist to experiment together with types of embodied knowledge. Within her exhibition practices, the artist activates an intimacy linked to touch and sound, attempts to explore verbal and non-verbal language, other ways of connecting between people and between people and works.

THE WORLD IN A CITY edited by. Gianluca Guerra

This cinematic walk will take you through a turbulent and suspended era in Trieste’s history, which inspired cinema and literature to tell stories of secret agents, double-crossers, opposing blocks, and international intrigues. Gianluca Guerra will discuss films spanning about twenty years, from the end of World War II to the 1960s spy B-movies, including 007, Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, and Christopher Nolan. Spy films, secret agents, and international intrigue through cinema’s portrayal of the “Trieste issue” and the Iron Curtain: French and American films depict the Trieste situation through the lens of adventure, starting with Sleeping Car to Trieste and Diplomatic Courier, followed by the entertaining eurospy films that mimicked 007. The cinematic walk THE WORLD IN A CITY will explore the locations of espionage and thrillers, telling the stories of the adventures that took place there, blending historical reality, legend, and fiction.
