Film festivals and mental health: new research on workers in the field

In the world of film festivals there is increasing talk about working well-being and mental health. It is precisely from this need that a new research project promoted by the network of film festivals MIOB – Moving Images Open Borders, of which the Trieste Film Festival is one, was born. The Trieste Film Festival decided to investigate the psychological conditions of those who work, or have worked, in this sector.

Behind the glamorous image made up of red carpets, screenings and international meetings, festival work can in fact turn out to be much more complex than one imagines. Tight deadlines, periods of intense pressure and irregular rhythms represent a daily reality for many professionals. There are those who manage to find energy precisely in this hectic climate and those, on the other hand, who feel the need to establish clearer boundaries in order to maintain a balance between personal life and work.

Leading the study is psychiatrist Jean-Victor Blanc, a specialist at the Hôpital Saint-Antoine in Paris and university lecturer at the Sorbonne, as well as founder of the Pop&Psy festival, dedicated to the dialogue between pop culture and psychology. The initiative was created in collaboration with professionals from the MIOB circuit and aims to gather useful data to better understand the work dynamics of the sector and identify possible areas for improvement.

The questionnaire is aimed at all people who work or have worked in the field of film festivals. The goal is to involve as wide an audience as possible, including different professional experiences, different age groups, genres and geographical backgrounds.
