36TSFF – FRIDAY, JANUARY 24TH

THE COMPETITIONS, AN OUT-OF-COMPETITION SCREENING, PANELS, AND BOOK PRESENTATIONS
The 36th edition of the Trieste Film Festival comes to an end.

At 11:00 AM at ANTICO CAFFÈ SAN MARCO, we gather for the final Q&A MEETINGS WITH AUTHORS AND FESTIVAL GUESTS.

Guests will include Danis Tanović (director of My Late Summer), Anja Matković (actress in My Late Summer), Nikola Kuprešanin (screenwriter of My Late Summer), Damian Kocur (director of Under the Volcano), Paula Ďurinová (director of Lapilli), Bálint Szimler (director of Lesson Learned), Marko Đorđević (director of That’s it for today).

At LIBRERIA MINERVA, at 6:00 PM, the book JUGOBASKET by Alessandro Toso will be presented, with Bogdan Tanjević, curated by Bottega Errante Edizioni.

In this book, the most prominent former players of a unique sports movement narrate their stories and careers in the first person. From Boša Tanjević, Praja Dalipagić, Žele Obradović to Toni Kukoč, Saša Danilović, and many others, the story unfolds, starting with the reconstruction of the country after World War II and ending with the dissolution of the political and social utopia envisioned by Marshal Tito. Over a period of fifty years, the Yugoslav players evolve from semi-professionals to becoming global sports icons, companions, and rivals of true legends, such as Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson. The author has collected their testimonies in a series of exclusive stories that together create an unforgettable portrait of history and sport.

ALESSANDRO TOSO is the author of three novels: Destini Verticali (Ediciclo), A Galla (Scrittura&Scritture), and La Ragazza del Bar Centrale (Bottega Errante). Since October 2023, he has been hosting Boomerball Podcast alongside Massimo Iacopini, a podcast where they interview legends of Italian basketball.

The discussion will be with Bogdan Tanjević, former player of OKK Belgrade and the Yugoslav National Team. He made a name for himself as a coach, winning trophies with both clubs and national teams: from Italy (championship with Milan in 1996) to Turkey (silver medal at the World Championship in 2010), with a total of 96 matches as head coach of the Italian National Team.

Free entry. Event in Italian.

Also at 6:00 PM, we present an event related to the exhibition (T)HERE: at the Econtemporary Gallery, the event BEYOND WORDS, Performance and Talk, curated by Gaia Mencagli, will take place. The event consists of a study on language, inspired by the artistic research of Elsa Mencagli Andersen in the exhibition (T)HERE. Gaia Mencagli will share the first stage of this physical research on language and its forms, convinced that the use of words is only one of our many ways of communicating.

Free entry until all available spots are filled.

CINEMA AMBASCIATORI

At 11:00 AM, we present the out-of-competition feature film SLOW by Marija Kavtaradze (LT – ES – SE, 2023, col., 108’). Slow follows the relationship of two 30-year-olds – dancer Elena and sign language interpreter Dovydas. The couple tries to make their relationship work despite their different sexual needs and expectations. The film is an intimate portrayal of a very unlikely but relatable love story. Shot on 16mm, the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023, in the “World Cinema – Dramatic” section, winning the Directing Award. Slow is also the winner of the MIOB New Vision Award 2024.

Nutsa Gogoberidze was Georgia’s first woman director, before being separated from her family for ten years as a gulag prisoner, and entirely cut off from her censored works for the rest of her life. Together with her daughter and film director Salome Alexi, Lana Gogoberidze sets out to bring together the pieces of Nutsa’s life.

At 4:00 PM, the Premio Corso Salani will present SONG OF ALL ENDS by Giovanni C. Lorusso (I – F – LB, 2024, col. & b-w., 73’). The film follows the life of a family of six in the Shatila camp, a series of days

made of nothingness and boredom. Slowly, through hardship and dreams, we discover a family grieving the loss of their youngest daughter, Houda, who passed away after the 2020 Beirut port explosion. This will lead them to abandon all their possessions in search of a new beginning.

At 6:00 PM, the Premio Corso Salani will screen TERRA INCOGNITA by Enrico Masi (I – F, 2024, col., 93’). Two utopian experiences unfold in parallel. In the Italian Alps, a family of German origin lives without electricity apart from society. On the other side of the Alpine border, in France, an immense plant is being built to research atomic fusion.

Terra Incognita is a dialogue between opposing development models, reflecting on the human condition and its relationship to material resources.

POLITEAMA ROSSETTI

Under the Volcano has been selected as Poland’s official Oscar entry for Best International Feature. The film premiered at the Toronto IFF in 2024.

The island’s residents live peculiar lives that they have grown accustomed to, particularly influenced by Ićo, the town mayor, and Nediljko, his business partner in cultivating eco-marijuana. Only after Maja grows closer to Saša do the dimensions of her unresolved family relationships become clear. Amid newly stirred emotions and through a series of unexpected events, Maja will finally face questions from her past. The film premiered at the Sarajevo Film Festival in 2024.

At 8:30 PM, the AWARD CEREMONY will take place.

The ceremony will be followed by a special screening of CROSSING by Levan Akin (SE – DK – F – TR – GE, 2024, col., 106’). When Lia learns from Achi, a neighbor, that Tekla might be living in Turkey, they set off together to find her. In Istanbul they discover a beautiful city full of connections and possibilities—but looking for someone who never intended to be found is harder than they thought. Until they meet Evrim, a lawyer fighting for trans rights. As Lia and Achi weave their way through the city’s backstreets, Tekla starts to feel closer than ever. Crossing was the opening film of the “Panorama” section at the Berlinale 2024.

The closing party will take place at AQVEDOTTO CAFFÈ from 10:00 PM, with TRANS EUROPA EXPRESS, a DJ set curated by Jazza & Libra.

A musical journey that crosses imaginary borders, with two protagonists who will bring to life Trans Europa Express, a unique evening for the Trieste Film Festival that transcends East and West through the rhythms and atmospheres of electronic music.

Jazza is a musical storyteller with over 20 years of experience, capable of weaving together shamanic deep house, cutting-edge electronics, obscure Italo disco, and new wave, without nostalgia. In his DJ sets, Jazza takes the audience on a journey through ever-evolving sounds and visions.

Libra, a young talent from Italy’s East Coast, leads us on a trip through eras that were never lived and places that were never explored, a world without borders where the energy of music reigns.
