WILD ROSES TRIBUTE TO GERMAN WOMEN FILMMAKERS AND
THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF CLU – UNITED WORKERS FRANCO BASAGLIA SOCIAL COOPERATIVE

The second day of Trieste Festival screenings at Teatro Miela focuses mainly on Wild Roses -the section of the Trieste Film Festival that each year takes stock of female filmmakers from a Central and Eastern European country: after Poland, Georgia and Ukraine, here is a selection – by Berlinale Executive Director Mariëtte Rissenbeek – of the most interesting female perspectives of contemporary Germany.
Thirteen titles by thirteen female directors will be on the program: there will be films that have won awards around the world, but also less universally known works that can unveil names (yet) to be discovered by Italian audiences, which -as Nicoletta Romeo, artistic director of the Trieste Film Festival, explains- “will show us a modern, inclusive, multicultural country far from stereotypes”.

The screenings begin at 2:00 p.m. with WESTERN by Valeska Grisebach (D – BG – A, 2017, col., 119′) set in the Bulgarian countryside where a group of German construction workers is sent to work in a remote site. The foreign land awakens the men’s sense of adventure but also forces them to face prejudice and mistrust caused by language barriers and cultural differences. Western was presented in 2017 at Cannes in the “Un Certain Regard” section and in 2018, as a Special Event, at the Trieste Film Festival. “Several cues have contributed to the making of this film… One was the Western genre. I grew up with Western films in the 1970s, I used to watch them sitting in front of a television in West Berlin … [also] the theme of latent xenophobia was something I had long wanted to explore in a film … I liked the idea of German men who, with their claimed technical superiority, arrive in Bulgaria and share the communist experience with the locals.” (V. Grisebach).

At 6:00 p.m. we will watch ANIŞOARA by Ana-Felicia Scutelnicu (Anishoara, D – MD, 2016, col., 106′), the story of a 15-year-old girl who lives in a small village in Moldova. In the summer, during the melon harvest, she falls in love for the first time. The following autumn, a German tourist arrives at the village and, for a brief moment, enters her life.
During the winter, Anişoara goes to the seaside for the first time together with Dragoş, the young man with whom she is in love. The following spring Dragoş comes back to her with a surprise. It is the last year of Anişoara’s adolescence and adulthood is just around the corner. ANIŞOARA is a graduation film with which the director won the “When East Meets West Development Award” in Trieste in 2013. The film was then presented at the festival in 2017, during the 28th edition.

At 8:00 p.m. it is time for the first major international guest. Margarethe Von Trotta will present her film INGEBORG BACHMANN – REISE IN DIE WÜSTE Ingeborg Bachmann – Journey into the Desert (CH – D – L – A – HKJ – I, 2023, col., 111′ v.o. German – French – Italian). When Ingeborg Bachmann and Max Frisch met in Paris in the summer of 1958, they were already international celebrities in the literary field. Their love is passionate, but professional and personal frictions begin to disrupt their harmony. Directed by one of the most important female directors in the European film industry, the film was in competition at the last Berlinale.

Wild Roses 3 TAGE IN QUIBERON by Emily Atef (3 Days in Quiberon, D – A – F, 2018, b-n, 115′, German – French v.o.) Italian premiere will be closing the second day of Trieste Festival screenings. Romy Schneider, the biggest European star of her era, gives her last interview in a spa hotel with two journalists. Over three days the actress will talk about desire, professional ambition and the joy of living. The film was presented in competition at the Berlinale in 2018.

In the afternoon, there will be another important event with the world premiere screening of the non-competing 50 YEARS OF CLU – UNITED WORKERS FRANCO BASAGLIA SOCIAL COOPERATIVE by Erika Rossi (I, 2024, col & b-n, 58′, Italian v.o.). Fifty years ago the world’s first social cooperative was born: this is the story of how everything was possible in Franco Basaglia’s Trieste, and of those who still make it possible today.

NORDIC ATMOSPHERES IN THE CITY
by Marzia Arzon, tour guide
Today as in the past, Trieste is a city on the border, which exudes a different, icy, Nordic charm and where, at the same time, one can savour a Levantine atmosphere: one can feel it in the streets, smelling the scent of distant spices, used in the city foods and customs. The walk on Saturday 20th at 11:00 a.m. will have, as its leitmotif, as its narrating soul, the discovery of Trieste through its cleverly mixed contrasts to capture a city with a “geographically Slovenian territory, which had an Austro-Hungarian administration but an Italian essence” (cit. Fabio Cusin). The starting point will be the Casa del Cinema, Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi 3. Admission fee, mandatory reservations: prenotazionitsff@gmail.com
