TEMPO D’ATTESA

Waiting Time Claudia Brignone
I, 2023, col., 75’
Italian o.v.

A group of women meet once a week with Teresa, a midwife, an experienced and revolutionary woman, who guides and supports them during pregnancy. They discuss the birth of the child they are carrying in their wombs and the birth of themselves as new mothers. Waiting Time premiered at the Turin FF, where it won the Special Jury Prize.

It’s summer, and the warm sunlight bathes Teresa as she walks towards the shade of a large magnolia tree. Teresa, a midwife, is seventy years old, with braided white hair and a welcoming smile. Seated in a circle under the tree are about ten pregnant women, all with different stories and background and at different stages of pregnancy. As they introduce themselves and share fragments of their lives they reflect with Teresa on the transitional phase they are going through. From their stories a tapestry of emotions, doubts, and fears is woven. Waiting Time premiered at the Torino FF, where it won the Special Jury Prize.

“When I discovered I was pregnant, it felt as if everyone had an opinion and a truth about the right things to do. I found myself directed down a path that had been decided by others for me, based on what appeared to be customs and standardized practices… I wondered if there could be another, more personal way to navigate the complete upheaval I was experiencing. It was from this ‘search’ of mine that this film was born.” (C. Brignone)
