The Cineteca di Bologna has selected four silent short films by Lotte Reiniger, dating back to the 1920s, 1930s and 1950s, which will be accompanied by live music by Maestro Daniele Furlati.
The screening programme includes:
Aschenputtel
(Cinderella, Germania/1922-1923) R.: Lotte Reiniger D.: 17’
Reiniger’s Cinderella is a dark, irreverent and bittersweet version of the popular tale. Visually, it is presented through a zigzag of jagged shots giving it a distinctively hard-edged feel.
Dornröschen
(Sleeping Beauty, Germania/1922) R.: Lotte Reiniger D.: 9’
At the same time as she was shooting Cinderella, Lotte Reiniger made another film inspired by the Grimm Brothers – Sleeping Beauty. The decorative nature of the way some action sequences were shot, and the use of carefully calculated fade-outs reveal many common creative traits between the two films.
Papageno
(Germania/1935) R.: Lotte Reiniger D.: 11′
Papageno, the bird-catcher from Mozart’s Magic Flute, spends his time with his mates, fights against a wiggling snake, and, finally, finds love. This is a typical example of the films the director dedicated to the world of opera.
Puss in Boots
(GB/1954) R.: Lotte Reiniger, Carl Koch D.: 11’
Based on the famous fairytale by the Grimm Brothers, the short film tells the story of the clever puss in boots and feathered hat, and how he managed to provide his poor master with an entire kingdom.
