Mollies is a queer-feminist collective living at a trailer park next to Ostkreuz in Berlin for nearly a decade. The Garden Cadences documents their last summer there before being evicted.
“In 2021, I made traces of a moment that would otherwise be inevitably lost and filmed Mollies before their imminent eviction … For Mollies, living together was not just about seeking a different way of living, but also about the need to form a community that would embrace and empower. The difficulty of trying to find a new place spacious enough to accommodate all nine members crashed with personal friction between them and they didn’t survive as a collective. Aalo comes from Finland, Jone is from Lithuania, Aoife was born in Dubai. Neo uses no pronouns, several use they/them, several are transitioning… This is a space of fluidity in more ways than one. It is a film about togetherness, made together, offering a glimpse of queer everyday life led outside the patriarchal-capitalist complex, while also being a record of the time spent together, doing nothing, like beasts.” (D. Dane Komljen
Dane Komljen was born in 1986 in Banja Luka, then Yugoslavia. He studied film directing at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade and completed a Master’s study in contemporary art at Le Fresnoy, France. He works and lives in Berlin. His films have been selected at major international film festivals, including Cannes, Locarno and Rotterdam. The Garden Cadences premiered at Cinéma du Reel and was then presented at many festivals worldwide, including Jeonju IFF, Karlovy Vary IFF, BelDocs and DOKLeipzig.
