Arthur and Diana are siblings. Together with Diana’s two-year-old son, they leave Berlin for Paris for a short, relaxed trip for the required annual safety inspection of their rusty old Renault. But the journey won’t be relaxed, the direction won’t be Paris and whether the car will go along is definitely questionable. After an encounter with the police, an antagonistic stop at their mother’s place, an overly sensual party, a flat tire, a funeral, and repeated tumultuous car conversations, they will end up all the way down in Italy, with a few more friends and hopes than they had left with. After its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival 2023, Arthur & Diana was then presented at other international festivals including Athens and Mar del Plata in Argentina.
“One way or another, and whether we like it or not, most films are a self portrait— this one is that, but much more radically so. Arthur and Diana’s characters are inspired by my brother and myself, and we also interpret our own alter-egos on screen. The film, however, is a work of fiction and the events and other characters are mainly invented. With this type of auto-fiction, I wanted to try and explore our relationship in a playful way, yet capture the depth of the feelings that both connect and separate us.” (S. Summa)
