This itinerary will walk you through the history of women’s work from the late 18th century to the present day, guiding you through well-known and lesser-known places of the city of Trieste.
We’ll delve into the stories of pancogole (female bakers) and mlekarice (milkmaids), exploring the lives of women employed in the manufacture of sails, and those who transported stones for pier construction. Additionally, we’ll discover the roles of women employed in rosolio distilleries, as well as other jobs undertaken by women in more recent times.
We will go on to explore Trieste as a working-class city during the 1960s and 1970s—the era of women’s emancipation—progressing through to the present day, and the professions associated with the gentrification of the city.
