FRIDAY, JANUARY 19TH
6:30 P.M. TRIESTE FILM FESTIVAL OPENING WITH A DOUBLE SCREENING OF RADU JUDE’S LATEST FILM

“ONCE UPON A TIME THERE WAS THE DDR” PANEL IN THE AFTERNOON

The first day of screenings of the Trieste Festival marks a double appointment with the latest film by Radu Jude, one of the greatest directors of Romanian and European cinema of our time: NU AȘTEPTA PREA MULT DE LA SFÎRȘITUL LUMII (Don’t Expect Too Much from the End of the World, RO – L – F – HR, 20) will be projected at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

During the day, a free entrance panel, entitled “ONCE UPON A TIME THERE WAS THE GDR – FIVE AUTHORS FROM EAST GERMANY BETWEEN YESTERDAY AND TODAY.”, will also take place. Today, it is not easy to talk about what the German Democratic Republic was, even 34 years after the implosion of the regime that created it. Certainly, enthusiasts of Real Socialism experienced the demise of the GDR as the sinking of Atlantis mythical island. On the other hand, for those who saw the Berlin Wall as a symbol of totalitarian barbarism, its fall represented a victory for democracy. We will be discussing this topic at the Bobi Bazlen Hall in a panel by DeutschZentrum Triest with writer and journalist Elisabetta d’Erme, who has been for years the cultural correspondent from Germany for Il Manifesto and other newspapers.

The opening day ends at Hangar Teatri with the concert/show by SAHAREYA, anticipated by a warm-up with Antares Color. The #TSFF, Hangar Teatri and Kino Šiška in Ljubljana join forces once again to bring to Trieste the newest, freshest, bravest music that Central Eastern Europe has to offer. SAHAREYA, aka Sarah Al Saleh, is a rapper, singer, dancer, performer and actress. SAHAREYA creates shows that include rap and dance and link all the passions she shares with her brother, the rapper DJ SunnySun. Through hip hop, she explores new ways to weave together different atmospheres and genres such as R&B, trap, rap and electronic music. In 2022, she released her debut album “Improvised Colors” and began participating in various showcases and festivals throughout Europe. She also collaborated with German producer and musician ZOUJ (Adam Lenox) and his band for an extremely successful European tour and then left with her brother for a tour in India.
Appointment is at 9 p.m. at Hangar Teatri. Tickets are available for pre-sale at vivaticket.com or biglietteria@hangarteatri.it or the phone number +39 3883980768.

EVENTS WITH RESERVATION / MORE EVENTS

NORDIC ATMOSPHERES IN THE CITY
by Marzia Arzon, tour guide
Today as in the past, Trieste is a city on the border, which exudes a different, icy, Nordic charm and where, at the same time, one can savour a Levantine atmosphere: one can feel it in the streets, smelling the scent of distant spices, used in the city foods and customs.
The walk on Saturday 20th at 11:00 a.m. will have, as its leitmotif, as its narrating soul, the discovery of Trieste through its cleverly mixed contrasts to capture a city with a “geographically Slovenian territory, which had an Austro-Hungarian administration but an Italian essence” (cit. Fabio Cusin). The starting point will be the Casa del Cinema, Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi 3. Admission fee, mandatory reservations: prenotazionitsff@gmail.com

On the tour, you will be told the story of his arrival, from Dublin to Trieste, in October 1904, of his letters, his books and his Triestine dialect. And finally the answer to the question, “Was he a friend of Italo Svevo?” The starting point will be the Casa del Cinema, Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi 3.
