Princes and Princesses
Michel Ocelot
F, 1999, col., ‘67
by Schermi e Lavagne/Cineteca di Bologna
Author of the much-loved Kirikù, della fiaba di Azur e Asmar,Dililì in Paris andLe Pharaon, le Sauvage et la Princesse, withPrinces and Princesses Ocelot Ocelot has created a timeless work: the reference to the fairy tale and its archetypal characters declined in different cultural meanings, the choice of the silhouette that, like a shadow, conceals the physiognomic details of the protagonists and at the same time recalls an art, that of the shadow theatre, whose origins are lost in tales and documents thousands of years old, all contribute to confer universality to the film.
Screening dedicated to primary schools.

Screenings of silent films with live musical accompaniment
by Schermi e Lavagne / Cineteca di Bologna
Over one hundred years ago, Lotte Reiniger, a pioneer of German cinema, created some of her masterpieces in silhouette animation, inspired by the world of classic fairy tales. Through the enchanting art of hand-cut black silhouettes, she brought to life an animated universe from the 1920s to the 1950s. This universe was entirely founded on the interplay of light and shadow, thus creating an animation technique that recalled the ancient art of Chinese shadows.
