Špela graduated in Art History, which means she’s never had a steady job. Her closest friends moved
abroad years ago and are not planning to return, but Špela chose to remain in Ljubljana. At 29, she finds
herself feeling lonely, unemployed, and sleeping on the couch of her disappointed parents, all while Slovenia
faces a seemingly never-ending economic crisis. Determined to turn her life around, she forges a new
friendship with a group of similarly fated losers, which threatens to prolong her extended adolescence.
“It seems like the majority of young, educated and ambitious people have left Slovenia in the past couple of
years and the ones who stayed keep asking themselves if we really made the right decision. My Last Year
as a Loser is a drama/comedy about disillusionment, shame, and the gap between the overeducated,
underemployed millennials and their parents, who had high expectations for their kids and feel powerless
when watching them fail.” (U. Menart)
