The longstanding tradition of the <\/span>Wild Roses<\/b> section at the Trieste Film Festival (during its 35th edition from January 19 to 27), which each year takes stock of the female filmmakers of a Central Eastern European country, now turns its focus to <\/span>German cinema<\/b>. Following editions dedicated to Poland, Georgia, and Ukraine, this year’s selection\u2014carefully curated by Berlinale Executive Director <\/span>Mari\u00ebtte Rissenbeek<\/b>\u2014features a compilation of the most compelling female perspectives from contemporary Germany.<\/span><\/p>\n

The programme will feature <\/span>thirteen titles<\/b> from as many authors\u2014films that have won numerous awards around the world, alongside lesser-known works, that will unveil names yet to be discovered by the Italian audience\u2014explains Nicoletta Romeo, artistic director of the Trieste Film Festival\u2014who will paint a picture of a \u2018a modern, inclusive, and multicultural country that defies stereotypes\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Leading the German delegation will be <\/span>Margarethe von Trotta<\/b>, guest in Trieste to present her new film, <\/span>Ingeborg Bachmann – Journey Into the Desert<\/span><\/i> (soon to be released in Italian cinemas by Movies Inspired). <\/span>Von Trotta<\/b>, symbol of <\/span>Neuer Deutscher Film<\/span><\/i> and winner of the Golden Lion at Venice in 1981 with her film <\/span>Marianne and Juliane<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>Ulrike Ottinger<\/b> (whose film <\/span>Paris Calligrammes<\/span><\/i> will also be showcased) are protagonists of a generation of leading female artists at the forefront of German film.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Other names familiar to international festival audiences include <\/span>Maren Ade<\/b>, the breakout talent from Cannes 2016 whose film <\/span>Toni Erdmann<\/span><\/i> introduced the world to the exceptional actress Sandra H\u00fcller; <\/span>Valeska Grisebach<\/b> and <\/span>Angela Schanelec<\/b> for their recent works (<\/span>Western<\/span><\/i>, shown at Cannes in 2017, and <\/span>Music<\/span><\/i>, awarded Best Screenplay at the latest Berlinale); <\/span>Maria Speth<\/b>, recipient of the Silver Bear for <\/span>Mr. Bachmann and His Class;<\/span><\/i> Maria Schrader<\/b> winner of the Audience Award at the European Film Awards for <\/span>Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe;<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Emily Atef<\/b>, capturing an unprecedented portrayal of Romy Schneider in <\/span>3 Days in Quiberon<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

And still, the cosmopolitan talent <\/span>Ana-Felicia Scutelnicu<\/b> (<\/span>Anishoara<\/span><\/i>), <\/span>Ay\u015fe<\/b> Polat<\/b> (<\/span>In the Blind Spot<\/span><\/i>), the daring <\/span>Nicolette Krebitz<\/b> (<\/span>Wild<\/span><\/i>), <\/span>Nora Fingscheidt<\/b> (<\/span>System Crasher<\/span><\/i>), and <\/span>Frauke Finsterwalder <\/b>(<\/span>Sisi & I<\/span><\/i>)<\/span><\/p>\n

Rissenbeek explains, “Wild Roses serves as a real inspiration to contemplate nonconformist and courageous female filmmakers, along with films that both engage and amuse me, yet may also be difficult and uncomfortable. After all, there’s no rose without thorns.”<\/span><\/p>\n
