Loosely based on the novel of the same name by Martin Amis, The Zone of Interest is the story of a seemingly normal German family in a bucolic little house with a swimming pool, living a daily routine made up of boat trips, the father’s office work, his wife’s teas with her friends, and Sundays spent fishing on the river. Shame that the man in question is Rudolf Höss, the Auschwitz commandant, and that the delightful little villa with garden in which he lives with his family in surreal serenity is located right on the edge of the concentration camp, a stone’s throw from the horror, which is so near and so far. Grand Prix at Cannes 2023 and chosen as the British entry for the Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards.
“The representation of historical atrocity is a complex proposition that has been tackled by directors such as Resnais, Spielberg and Tarantino. Glazer opts for a bold form of inversion. Working with rigorously researched historical material – and boldly reshaping the narrative of Amis’ novel – the director has created a milestone in the history of modern Holocaust films, whose horrors remain around and ephemeral without trivialising their gravity or diluting their power to disturb. In the singular 2013 sci-fi film Under the Skin, Glazer pursued a type of purely alien gaze, at once ruthless and innocent, and The Zone of Interest achieves something similar through the equanimity of the images. Crucially (and paradoxically), it is the absolute, stark flatness of the directing, the calm, relentless positioning of the camera under natural light, that testifies to the gravity of the scenario.” (Production notes)
